This is an exceptionally large gris gris mixed metal pendant necklace from the Tuareg tribe of Niger, West Africa, worn for talismanic protection. With a height of approx 22cm, it’s an incredibly unique example of it’s kind.
Functioning as a hollow container, it’s designed to hold a folded piece of paper inscribed with protective verses, traditionally suspended from a cord and worn close to the body. Due to this contextual history and use of the item, the right side does feature an opening where the paper was once placed.
The hammered repoussé work makes this an incredibly unique, charming textural addition to a space, whether mounted on a wall or leant on a mantel or shelf.
